The reserve named for the stars above it.

Inkwenkwezi is isiXhosa for star. Four of the Big Five range across five biomes here — grassland, forest, thicket, coast and a tidal estuary — forty minutes from East London, and entirely malaria-free.

Inkwenkwezi's white lions carry a genuine recessive gene — not a dye, not a trick of the light.

The reserve

Close enough to hear them breathe.

We take you as close to the animals as we can without disturbing them. That is the whole discipline of this place: eleven open 4×4 vehicles, guides who have worked these valleys for years, and a rule that the wildlife sets the pace.

Lion, leopard, buffalo and white rhino share the reserve with giraffe, nyala and a small pride of white lions — rare animals whose colouring comes from a recessive gene, and who are among the few reasons visitors fly into East London at all.

Wildlife & flora of the reserve

Five biomes, one boundary

An unusually crowded piece of ground.

Most reserves offer one landscape. Inkwenkwezi holds five distinct regional ecosystems and a saltwater estuary inside a single fence — which is why the species list runs so long.

Dining

Stone, thatch, and a valley to look at.

The Sunset Restaurant sits on a hillside above the camps, its walls built from stone culled out of Inkwenkwezi's own geology and roofed in traditional thatch. Resident guests eat here; everything is prepared on site.

  • Sunday buffet lunch — 12:00 to 14:00, R295 per adult. Under 10s half price, under 3s free.
